The leaves are beginning to fall and children will soon be in need of new togs. Claire Spreadbury reveals the trends to wrap them up in

Autumn has arrived - and with it comes an abundance of fabulous fashions. But before you blow all of your spare money on boots, coats and dresses, spare a thought for your little ones, as their wardrobes will likely need replenishing, too.

With a burst of blooms, a splash of grey, some brand new denim and a creature comfort, you'll have all the best trends in childrenswear covered.

FABULOUS FLORALS

The floral trend is an easy way to keep kidswear bright and beautiful this season.

"Spring is in bloom this winter," says Yanitsa Yonchev, creative director of Love Made Love. "Flowers are invading outfits, adding colour and bounce to dark fabrics. Garments are being turned into flowering lawns, inhabited by 3D prints and flowers that climb up delicate chiffon and virgin wool fabrics."

So if the grey skies are getting to you already, pick a bouquet that suits and let little ones bloom.

THE MAGIC JEANIE

Jeans For Genes Day is approaching on September 19, boosting sales in a solid wardrobe staple.

"Denim is key this season - durable, practical, comfortable and always timeless - plus, they get better with age," says Sophia Walsh, director and buyer at Five Boys Clothing.

"Jeans for kids are available in as many colours, washes and fits as they are for adults, which means you can buy the right pair to match the right shape. Denim works whatever the weather. Team with more denim and add a jacket, too."

THE CUTE COLLECTION

Everyone's in love with the woodland trend, but no one can pull it off as well as a child.

"This autumn takes inspiration from all things whimsical, whether it's a winter wonderland or woodland creatures," says Estella Arroyo, kidswear design manager for George at Asda. "Think subtle sparkle, lofty knits and fluffy fur, with photographic snowy scenes or bold woodland creature imagery, embroidered and appliqued."

Pick your favourite cute creature and decide whether to go bold or subtle - it's a look that can't fail this snugly season.

GORGEOUSLY GREY

It's the colour of the season. Grey can look dull and lifeless on little ones - but it doesn't have to be that way.

"Easy to pair with brights or neutrals and good for hiding all matter of scrapes, grey is perfect for children," says Maria Busquets, founder of Cashmirino.

"I find a different coloured trimming or detail, such as an elbow colour, brings more interest to the piece and helps co-ordination within the outfit. Wear with a dark pair of trousers for a comfortable and stylish look for boys, or over a coloured dress or skirt for girls.
