Introducing Hank Crawford (Warner Classics 8122799393) These 13 tracks make an ideal introduction to the blues and souldrenched alto saxophonist.

They date from the 60s when he was musical director for the Ray Charles band and range from moody versions of Angel Eyes and Misty to swingers like The Peeper.

Introducing David Newman (Warner Classics 8122799388) Saxophonist and flautist Newman is also associated with the Ray Charles band and both Charles and Crawford are featured on the opening track, Fathead. Later tracks, mostly Newman's own compositions from the 60s and 70s, are a funky sound, typical of the period.

Studio 51 Sessions with Ken Colyer, Vol. 2 (Upbeat Jazz URCD222) Another generous selection with two 1972 sessions featuring Sammy Rimington/Johnny Rogers on clarinet, Barry Paiser trombone, Ray Smith piano and the reliable Annie Hawkins and Colin Bowden on bass and drums. Generally better sound on the second session, but both are worth hearing.
