VETERAN country music star Willie Nelson has gone more mainstream with his latest release, which isn’t a bad move.
The 79-year-old joins up with fellow grizzled veteran Merle Haggard on the opening track, A Horse Called Music, to winning effect, while the bizarre teaming with rapper Snoop Dogg and Kris Kristofferson on Roll Me Up And Smoke Me When I Die works miraculously, when it could have been a musical disaster.
The highlight of Heroes has to be Nelson’s startling cover of Coldplay’s The Scientist, which gives the pop song a new twist and underlines, in his own laid-back style, just what a brilliantly executed pop song it is.
