Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll (15, 115 mins, Entertainment In Video)
Stars: Andy Serkis, Olivia Williams, Naomie Harris, Bill Milner, Charlotte Beaumont, Ray Winstone, Toby Jones, Wesley Nelson
MAT Whitecross directs this free-wheeling biopic of 1970s punk pioneer Ian Dury. As a youngster, Ian (Nelson) contracts polio and is paralysed down the left side of his body. Musical ambitions consume Ian (Dury) as an adult and he neglects wife Betty (Williams) and children Jemima (Beaumont) and Baxter (Milner). In a misguided attempt to rebuild bridges with his boy, Ian allows Baxter to live with him and new girlfriend Denise (Harris). The youngster witnesses his father’s descent and foolishly tries to mould himself in his old man’s chaotic image. Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll is every bit as unconventional and fantastical as the man himself.
Chopping back and forth in time, the film is a mosaic of flashbacks, dream sequences and musical interludes.
