DAVID WALLIAMS is as famous to children for his hugely popular books as he is for appearing on television with programmes such as Britain’s Got Talent.
And the stage show of one of his most beloved stories has come to life this week at the Sunderland Empire courtesy of the Birmingham Stage Company.
Having not got round to reading Gangsta Granny just yet, this 130-minute performance was funnier than expected even though there is an emotional story too.
It sees the 11-year-old Ben’s (Ashley Cousins) relationship with his gran blossom as he realises she’s not as boring as he thought.
There is much more to the hilarious, cabbage-loving gran (Gilly Tompkins) who can’t control her wind than meets the eye because she is in fact an international jewel thief.
The pair embark on one last job to steal one of the most valuable items in the world, while a fantastic small cast combines to ensure the journey is an eventful one.
There’s plenty of laughs along the way as Ben’s selfish parents, Rachel Stanley and Benedict Martin, the nosy Mr Parker (Martin) and the funny professional dancer Flavio (Devesh Kishore) all bring something different to the show.
