Redcar's Festival of Thrift seeks artists and chefs

THE forthcoming Festival of Thrift has put out a call for emerging artists and amateur chefs who want to get involved with this year’s event at Kirkleatham, near Redcar, on September 17 and 18.

Four artists looking to establish themselves, who are living or working in Teesside and County Durham, are being sought to work with Navigator North, the Festival of Thrift and County Durham-based artist Steve Messam (stevemessam.co.uk) – who last year constructed a weight-bearing bridge out of 20,000 sheets of red paper in the Lake District.

The selected artists will each benefit from a bursary worth £2,800, to include £500, mentoring, workspace, technical support, equipment and professional support.

The project is called Stable and it is a Navigator North curated space and art installation, where the visitors can experience site-specific artworks and installations responding to the Stable Block and surroundings at Kirkleatham Museum. Applications must be received by Monday, August 1 August 2016.

Anyone who has ever wanted to run their own bistro, restaurant or café and fancies themselves as an amateur chef can take over one of the festival’s vintage camper vans for the weekend and show off their culinary skills to diners of between two and six people per hour. All that is required is for the menu and theme to be planned in advance – even dishwashing is provided.
