Holistic and natural are the watchwords when it comes to beauty treatments at Middleton Lodge. Jenny Needham reports

From the minute you walk into reception at Middleton Lodge, there's a feeling of calm. Adjoining a large sitting area which lead to the two Treatment Rooms, the bare brick, slate tiles and rustic wooden shelving all add to the natural feel of these stunning converted estate buildings. Large glass doors and windows let the light pour in and as respected hotel guide Sawday's says, you'll think you've washed up at a beautiful country house in Tuscany or Provence.

Across the courtyard, where you can sit and enjoy a coffee or cocktail in the sun, is the lodge's bar and restaurant. Chef Gareth Rayner also takes a rustic approach, creating a seasonal menu using the very best locally sourced produce.

The menu at the Treatment Rooms is less rustic, more luxury, but still all about products that let nature do the talking. You won't find any high-tech machines bleeping at you here. On offer is a variety of facials and massages, using the most organic and natural products from exclusive brands REN and VOYA. Derived from plants and minerals, REN’s core focus is on purity and pleasure, while VOYA is a completely organic seaweed based product range that's hand harvested in Ireland by a family-run business. It has powerful detoxifying properties.

"We take an organic, natural approach to beauty," says therapist Selena Blain. "And it's also very much about touch – I think people underestimate the power of touch."

So while a facial here consists of the usual cleanse, exfoliate, moisturise routine, the products are not simply put on, but massaged in, encouraged deep into the skin. "One of the nice things about the REN facials is how thorough and extended the cleansing process is," says Selena.

April’s Treatment of the Month is the REN Radiance Facial, which brightens and revitalises, helping you to slough off the winter and renew your skin for spring. An exfoliating mask serum is massaged gently onto the face to remove excess skin cells, creating a brighter, healthier glow. Then REN’s new Instant Brightening Beauty Shot Eye Lift - the latest go-to product from the skincare brand - is delicately massaged around the eyes. The serum cleverly works to diminish dark circles and puffiness, dramatically brightening the fragile eye area. The overall result is softer, more luminous skin, achieved with products so fragrant you can almost hear your skin slurping them up. An added bonus is the neck and shoulder massage which attacks any knotty tension. Bliss!

As well as the two treatment rooms, Middleton Lodge offers two shower rooms, a dedicated area for pedicures and manicures, relaxation lounge and an outside seating area, and is managed by a team with more than 15 years’ experience in the beauty industry, headed up by Selena.

"We believe the three key things for enjoying a treatment are the products, the therapists and the ambience and design of the surroundings," says Rebecca Tappin, Design Director of Middleton Lodge. We think we’ve got all three spot on, and hopefully our clients agree.”
