Long Lost Family, (ITV, 9pm)

THIS episode features two stories of sisters kept, while their brothers were given up for adoption: a family split apart by the decision to give up a baby boy more than 50 years ago, and a sister searching for the brother who was kept a secret from her as a child.

Elizabeth Wells and her daughter Janice from Somerset began searching for Paul Meddelton 45 years after Elizabeth had to make the agonising decision to keep Janice while giving up her son, Janice’s brother, for adoption.

“I’ve missed him from the day I agreed to go through with it and I regret it, I sincerely regret it” says Elizabeth.

Elizabeth grew up in Somerset and, at the age of 16, began dating her first boyfriend. But he was married. She fell pregnant and gave birth to Janice, with her parents helping to look after Janice. Then, when Janice was seven months old, Elizabeth fell pregnant again. By the time Elizabeth gave birth to their second child, a son whom she named Brian, the babies’ father had decided to remain with his wife and cut off all ties with Elizabeth.

Elizabeth later married and rebuilt her life with her daughter Janice. “I have a guilt that I got to stay with mum but my brother didn’t” says Janice.

Brian, now called Paul, is fond living in Kent and Nicky Campbell travels there to meet Paul and give him the news that his mother and his sister are searching for him.

Paul says “One day your life is just trundling along and then this tsunami comes and washes everything you’ve known away and the game has changed.”

Meanwhile Tracey Collins, from near Peterborough, is searching for her brother Christian Hilton. Tracey was born in 1977 and grew up an only child with her parents Pamela and Thomas Dickson. When she was 17, her mother told her she had an older brother, Thomas, who they gave up for adoption before Tracey was born. She found her father relieved to confide in her about the hardest thing he’d ever had to do. At the time: they were unmarried, living in one room, and had no work.

Tragically, Tracey’s father died from two strokes after saying he now wanted to help her find her brother.

Tracey’s mother then died in 2008. Since then, Tracey and her husband Mick have been trying to find her brother. Adoption records, reveal Thomas is now called Christian, and grew up as an only child with his adoptive parents. Nicky goes to meet Christian in Lincolnshire where he lives with his adoptive parents, having suffered from nervous exhaustion some years ago.

“I certainly don’t feel as alone in the universe any more,” says Christian.
