Peter Kay's Car Share (BBC iPlayer, 9pm)

THE entire series of Peter Kay’s Car Share is premiering on BBC iPlayer for a limited period from tonight until Tuesday, before being broadcast on BBC1. John Redmond (Peter Kay) and Kayleigh Kitson (Sian Gibson) have been thrown together in a company car share scheme, forcing their paths to cross. Each trip brings fresh insight into John and Kayleigh's lives, with twists and turns in their unlikely relationship.

The show is BBC comedy boss Shane Allen’s first big signings since leaving Channel 4 for the BBC last autumn. The iPlayer showing is part of a “strategy to showcase a wider breadth and range of TV content” and will be the first series to premiere in this format before linear transmission on BBC1. The move comes as part of a 40-hour content trial on the BBC’s digital platform, approved by the BBC Trust.

One of the best-selling stand-up comedians in the world, Kay, 39, established himself in TV comedy thanks to Channel 4’s So You Think You’re Funny? He moved on to create fictional northern nightclub owner Brian Potter for That Peter Kay Thing (2000), and starred in the 2001 hit sitcom Phoenix Nights.

Peter Kay says: “To be finally working with the BBC on a new comedy is a great opportunity. The idea of two people car-sharing to work each day really appealed to me, because it highlights the comedy in the minutia of the daily trek and allows the spiralling conversations of life to unwind in all of their glory."

Allen says: “Everyone adores Peter. It’s bold and exciting for him to head in a more naturalistic comedy direction with this project. It will be a nifty new addition to his incredible body of work and the way it is being launched is very canny”

Have I Got News for You (BBC1, 9.30pm)

OBSERVERS couldn't wait to see Jeremy Clarkson's return to the BBC after his removal from Top Gear, wondering if he'd contrite, or as bombastic as usual. Team captains Ian Hislop and Paul Merton were likely to mercilessly rib him throughout and may well have been the reason for Clarkson to drop out as chairman. Journalist Camilla Long and actor-comedian Miles Jupp are the guest panelists tonight.
