MIRROR, mirror, on the wall – who's the fairest of them all? Sharon looks at the scratches on her face that troublesome young son Denny has caused in EastEnders (BBC1) but "the fairest" question isn't the only she's asking. She saying, "Who's the daddy?", a cry that echoes around Soapland from time to time.

Shazza is looking for her biological father. The late unlamented Dirty Den was her adoptive dad and for one brief moment on her search for her biological father it seems that DD might actual be her real father. But no, it emerges that he isn't, but did know her birth father really well.

Who could it be? Her biological mother died before she could tell, but that doesn't stop Shazza looking through old photographs with pal Ian, newly returned from his honeymoon and obviously tired of entertaining wife Jane already.

A trip to a DNA testing site provides a clue. Her mystery father could be Pete Beale, which would make Ian her brother. This makes you think – think mainly if Ian and Shazza have had an affair in the past because that would be very, very wrong indeed.

What with son Denny lashing out and husband Fill the Fug back with his feet under the table, Sharon has, like a man who's lost his false teeth, bitten off more than she can chew at the moment.

Kush too is going through an emotional time. The macho man opens up to Shabnam, who is burdened with a few past indiscretions of her own. The pair settle down for a heart-to-heart that ends up with Kush crying on Shabnam's shoulder. What she gets out of it – apart from soggy shoulder pads – is very little because he still won't commit to a proper relationship, and she's a woman with strict beliefs.

They have a much more violent way of settling things in Emmerdale (ITV1) as Aaron beats up his former lover Robert. Aaron has a lot of pent-up anger, the result of helping Robert cover up Katie's (accidental) death. He's been trying to keep his cool by taking long runs, but when Robert pushes him into attacking him, Aaron joins in wholeheartedly with lots of thump! wallop! Take that you cad!

Robert is left beaten and unsure what his ex-lover will do next. And he has to explain to new wife Chrissie about his wounds. "I was beaten up by my secret gay lover" isn't the thing to say, I would suggest.

Happier times for Adam and Victoria. It's down on one knee time for him – and it's not to tie his shoelaces. He decides to pop the question (and a few bottles of champagne) on her birthday by offering a traditional proposal. None of this, "Ow bout it, Vic?" But a proper on one knee proposal. He's already given her a puppy and a glimpse of flesh as a naked chef.

In Coronation Street (ITV1) it looks like a happy ending isn't on the cards for Kevin and Jenny. They dated over the Internet and get along famously, despite the objections of Rita, the adoptive mother that Jenny betrayed. Their latest date ends with Jenny calling a halt to their relationship because she's got the hint that nobody except Kevin wants her in Weatherfield.

Trouble too for Gail the hamster as grand-daughter Bethany refuses to return to Milan. Surely the delights of Weatherfield don't match the majesty of Milan. Bethany says life in Milan is boring and doesn't want to go back to Italy. Poor Gail doesn't know what to do for the best, although she's adamant that Bethany will have to pull her weight and pushes her off to Audrey's salon to help out in the hairdressers. Gail hopes it'll be a case of hair today, gone tomorrow.
