REVIEWS: Schubert, Mazolli: Shai Wosner Onyx ONYX4136) One of the foremost interpreters of Schubert, pianist Shai Wosner turns his hand to the composer’s Moments Musicaux and Piano Sonata in A. The programme includes an interesting twist with Missy Mazzoli’s Schubert-inspired Isabelle Eberhardt Dreams of Pianos. Superlative accounts that come highly recommended.

Wagner without Words: Llyr Williams Signum SIGCD338) Pianist Llyr Williams plays a selection of Liszt’s piano transcriptions of Wagner’s operas. The album includes his own arrangements of Glenn Gould’s Siegfried’s Rhine Journey and Prelude to Die Meistersinger transcriptions, as well as his own version of three scenes of Parsifal. Played with supreme sensitivity, this is a must for all Wagnerians.

Psalm: Contemporary British Trumpet Concertos (Signum SIGCD403) Trumpeter Simon Desbruslais leads the Orchestra of the Swan in performances of premier recordings from some of the UK’s leading composers. Inspired after performing Robert Saxton’s Psalm, he helped commission the three remaining works on the programme: Saxton’s Shakespeare Scenes; Deborah Pritchard’s Skyspace and John McCabe’s La Primavera. Works that explore every aspect of the instrument.
