THOSE who felt that Durham's annual Christmas entertainment couldn't get any better have been proved wrong, thanks to the addition of highly-experienced Geordie actor Chris Connel to the cast.

His portrayal of Widow Twankey was one of the stand-out performers (and that isn't easy with this experienced line-up of talent) and ensures that his decision to tour less with lead roles in projects like The Pitman Painters is definitely our gain in the North-East.

Connel ensures that even the most gullible audience member knows it's a bloke in a frock, and isn't afraid to take on his onlookers with a little unrehearsed banter.

This year director Gareth Tudor Price has taken the chance of rubbing the magic lamp and wishing up a new genie of the pen (writer Ben Crocker), but I was impressed with the mystical and madcap tale of Aladdin (played by Matt McGoldick) ensuring a truly wonderful night out for all the family. It is a fantastic mix of laughter, live music, mayhem and surprises.

Paul Harley makes the most of his comedy ability playing Wishee Washee and there is yet another sensational performance from the Gala panto's resident baddie Neil Armstrong, who gave us all plenty to boo and hiss with his evil Abanazar.

With loads of audience participation, a nice mix of Northern humour and some very impressive special effects it was a real treat from start to finish. If you’re looking for a night out over the festive break you would struggle to find a better production.

Runs until January 3. Box Office: 03000-266600
