THIS latest instalment of the Classical Concert Series at Middlesbrough Town Hall was a piano recital which showcased the talents and charisma of a rising star.

Vass presented a programme of piano masterpieces alongside his own arrangements and compositions. The short opener, an original composition called Tailcoats with Sunglasses, showcased Vass’ ease with a range of musical styles, as well as his virtuosity on the instrument. His talent was then established further by effortless changes in direction into Bach and Chopin.

The first half was completed by Vass’ own arrangement of Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody. Throughout, the pianist demonstrated a showmanship and comfort as a performer which made the variety of the programme feel very natural.

The second half followed in a similar vein, with Gerswin’s The Man I Love followed by Debussy and Turina’s wonderful Danzas Fantasticas, before another self-arrangement showstopper to complete the recital. This time, a medley of Bond themes had the Vass treatment, and to good effect, too.

It was easy to see why this young man has been put forward as a rising star of the future, as his ease with a variety of styles and engaging personality is evident throughout his performances.
