THE wheels of industry keep on turning for artist Anita Bowerman whose latest project is just about to take off. Having firmly established herself in her home town of Harrogate and the surrounding district, the people of the north east are now taking her under their wing.

Fresh from creating her intricate paper cuts to commemorate Le Tour de France, Anita has just finished an image of the iconic Angel of The North. She has also just released a Limited Edition brushed stainless steel and copper version - a completely new medium for Anita, bringing the Angel to life as a piece of wall art in steel, with glistening wings. It took her more than two months to complete - working three hours a day in her Harrogate studio.

"This amazing steel sculpture, created by Sir Antony Gormley, guards The North of England.," says Anita. "It is an iconic image standing 20 metres high with wings measuring 54 metres across and one which needed translating carefully onto paper. I spent hours visiting the site, then researching and drawing the Angel onto paper before finally cutting it out with a fine scalpel."

The image dimensions are 47cm x 31cm and features minute children, adults, dogs, rabbits and birds, now Anita's trademark, as she loves creating tiny details with her knife. "The people give the Angel scale and show a little boy and girl touching the structure with a man and lady," she says. "There is something very special about visiting this site, everyone is drawn to the sculpture, there seems to be almost angelic energy which surrounds it. My son was thrilled to be able to see The Angel close up and touch it."

Anita was originally commissioned by Hydram, a large Northern company to create a paper cut Angel with the intention of cutting it out in stainless steel.

"It has been a long process to arrive at the final metal product but the months of development are worth it," she says. Anita is releasing a limited edition of just 50 Laser cuts £250 and a limited Edition of 495 Giclee prints from £50. The stainless steel and copper version is £995.

Anita has been paper cutting for several years now and has created many images most recently A Cycle Tour of Yorkshire 2014 - a map of Stage 1 of Le Tour which took her five months to complete. She also created a popular wheel design which shows all the cyclists riding round for Stage 1 and 2, prints from £20. This is also available in stainless steel. Other designs from Anita’s portfolio including metre-long maps of Harrogate, Ilkley and York in her 'Enjoy' series. Each map took over 70 hours to complete, the York map took well over 100 hours. They show the most notable buildings and landmarks with little scenes.

The Dove Tree Art Studio in central Harrogate, near the theatre and behind Cardamom Black Restaurant, is Anita's working studio and gallery. It is a two-storey 19th century coach house refurbished in The French Atelier style featuring a grand piano allegedly used to open The Eiffel Tower. Here she creates her paper cuts and teaches water colour and mixed media courses using vibrant colours and lots of inspiration.

"I love colour, design and detail. As juxtaposition for this fine paper cutting, I also paint colourful local landscapes and trees outside just using twigs, leaves moss and other objects I stumble across," she says.

All Anita's designs can be viewed at The Dove Tree or can be found on her website www.anitabowerman.co.uk. Opening hours 10am-3.30pm Wednesday, Thursday and Friday; Saturday noon-5pm, other times by appointment.

Anita is exhibiting at the Living North Christmas Fair at York Racecourse, November 14-16. For information, contact Anita on 07760 157046
