JEEVES & Wooster in Perfect Nonsense is based on the short stories (in particular The Code of the Woosters) written by PG Wodehouse; it stars John Gordon Sinclair as Jeeves, James Lance as Wooster and is written by the Goodale Brothers.

In the play, Wooster is set out to retrieve a silver cow creamer ordered by his Aunt Dahlia (one of Robert Goodale's many characters) accompanied by his loyal valet Jeeves. The show won the Laurence Olivier award in 2014 for Best Comedy and rightly so, as it is a barrel of laughs.

For me, the best use of comedy comes from how self-aware the characters are that they’re performing in a play, making fun of their own cheap stage props and devices – it doesn’t take itself too seriously. The play is very much a satire of the upper-class and Lance plays Bertie Wooster terrifically in an exaggerated flamboyancy that gained many laughs from the audience.

I would say that if you enjoy borderline silly, physical comedy or you are a fan of the TV series, starring Hugh Laurie and Stephen Fry, then you will enjoy this play, if not, you may not be gasping for air. Although I’m not necessarily a fan of this style of comedy, I still found myself laughing along, and particularly enjoyed the clever slow-motion scene. The actors are brilliant, it’s a heartwarming story, and is genuinely made for a great evening at the theatre.
