Wagner Without Words: Llyr Williams (Signum Classics SIGCD388) Pianist Llyr Williams explores Wagner’s rich and evocative soundworld with insightful arrangements of Richard Wagner’s operas by Franz Liszt and Glenn Gould. The album includes Williams’ arrangement of music from Parsifal and Wagner’s own piano pieces, written early in his career. A highly stimulating album.
Hakim Plays Hakim (Signum Classics SIGCD389) Organist Naji Hakim performs a powerful collection of organ works on the modern Schuke Organ of the Palacio Euskalduna in Bilbao, Spain. He joins Marie-Bernadette Dufource for a set of meditation for two organists, inspired by Lucas Cranach the Elder’s woodcuts of the Apostles.
Strauss: Bernard Haitink (LPO-0079) The London Philharmonic, conducted by Bernard Haitink, in concert with Richard Strauss’ Don Juan and Ein Heldenleben. Haitink was renowned for his affinity to the composer and these live recordings are prime examples of his unobtrusive podium manner. Don Juan has a lively spontaneity while Ein Heldenleben has translucent quality. Highly recommended.
My Beloved’s Voice: Sacred Songs of Love (Signum Classics SIGCE370) The Choir of Jesus College Cambridge, directed by Mark Williams, perform an evocative selection of choral works inspired in varying ways by songs of Solomon. Superlative singing.
