These bright and breezy perennials bring a ray of sunshine to the late summer border with their golden, darkeyed daisy flowers, and do particularly well in sunny situations where the soil isn’t too dry.

Good tall varieties include R. laciniata Herbstsonne, which has green cones, while reliable compact types include the popular R. fulgida var. sullivantii Goldsturm with yellow petals and black cones. Smaller varieties can be used in fiery latesummer displays with crocosmias and red hot pokers, while those in pots can add interest around purple cordylines.

Larger types look best at the back of a border, fringed by late-flowering clematis.
