A FREE family event is set to take place over the coming Bank Holiday weekend. Organised by Gateshead's Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, children are invited to help create a landscape of colour inspired by French artist Daniel Buren’s exhibition Catch as catch can: work in situ.

Daniel Buren is widely considered to be France’s greatest living artist and one of the most influential figures in contemporary art for the last 50 years. After abandoning traditional painting in the 1960s, Buren uses fabric, paper tape and paint, choosing to make his artwork in situ, responding to individual locations and colouring the spaces in which they are created. His multi-coloured exhibition runs until October 12.

Kaleidoscape is a family event which takes place in the Baltic and on Baltic Square from Saturday, August 23 to Monday 25 from 11am to 4pm each day. Participants will be able to explore the world of the colour spectrum, create panels of colour and experiment with light in the different spaces. Families can build their own model boats with colourful sails as well as helping to decorate a giant sail, which will set off down the Tyne on a 28-foot Northumberland Coble at 3pm on Monday, August 25,

Sarah Bradbury, Baltic Community Programmer says about the Kaleidoscape event: “We are really excited to see Kaleidoscape fill Baltic and Baltic Square as children create a landscape of colour bringing the vibrancy of the Daniel Buren exhibition outdoors with their own creations.”
