1. Cut back hardy fuchsias to just above soil level as strong new basal growth appears.
  2. Start to sow hardy annuals directly into their flowering position.
  3. Plant tomatoes to grow in a cool greenhouse. Train them up tall canes or strings.
  4. Sow melons under glass.
  5. Prune winter-flowering heathers as the flowers fade.
  6. Apply slow-release fertiliser to containers and then mulch.
  7. Trim grey-leaved shrubs to keep them bushy.
  8. Plant new aquatic plants.
  9. Start to sow French beans outdoors with cloche protection.
  10. Sow pansies in boxes of light soil for a supply for next year.
  11. Transfer the seedlings to grow on in a frame prior to planting out in October.
