BUBBLING beneath the surface of ‘New’ Glasgow – with its Commonwealth Games-inspired gentrification of the dilapidated East End – there lies a society no less isolated now than before the men in sharp suits appeared.

Thank goodness for The Amazing Snakeheads, the product of ‘Old’ Glasgow, a burgeoning trio unleashing a potent antidote of rock and roll primed to draw in the disaffected and prove Scotland’s biggest city can retain its heart and soul while new brick replaces old. Frontman Dale Barclay has the swagger of a young Nick Cave, an accent fiercely true to his Weegie roots, and he helms a tight, totally wired three-piece band.

Label-mates with Arctic Monkeys, and with a spark if not a sound similar to Alex Turner’s mob, their debut record is the sound of wild nights on Sauchiehall Street, the clatter of Gallowgate, and echoes of the young Jesus and Mary Chain.
