CCTV pictures of witnesses detectives urgently want to trace

MURDER squad detectives have released CCTV pictures of witnesses they urgently want to trace in connection with the death of a North-East man.

Police investigating the killing of Paul Gilbert in Newcastle have renewed their appeal for help in the case.

Mr Gilbert, 22 years of Newbold Street, Walker, was attacked at around 5.45pm on Wednesday, February 13.

The assault took place on Welbeck Road and the junction with St Anthony's Road in Walker, Newcastle.

He was found collapsed and seriously injured and subsequently died in the Freeman Hospital on Thursday, February 28.

Police have been viewing CCTV and have images of three people they believe could be valuable witnesses and are asking the public to help identify them and contact the police straightaway.

The three were at a bus stop at Welbeck Road, outside of TAM's takeaway, at the time of the attack.

Detective Chief Inspector Steve Barron said: "We believe these three people could be important witnesses and we would urge them to contact the police straightaway. We would also ask anyone else who views these images and believes they recognise any of these individuals to get in contact with us."

The first is a man with a small child. He was waiting at the bus stop, but didn't actually get onto the bus when it arrived.

He had a small bag in his hands, which may have been chips.

The second is a young man wearing a hooded top with a long black fringe, he sat downstairs in the centre of the bus at the nearside.

He got off at Shields Road in Byker near Jackson's pub.

The third is a woman with blonde hair and a pram. She got on the bus and stood throughout the whole journey with the pram. She got off at Morrisons on Shields Road in Byker.

Det Insp Barron added: "I want to stress that these three people are simply witnesses and have nothing to fear by coming forward and speaking to us."

Twins Philip Craggs and Mark Craggs, both aged 24 and from Newcastle, have been charged with murder.

To help with the inquiry call 08456-043-043 and ask for the Paul Gilbert murder incident room.
