The Crystal Maze: Celebrity Special (Channel 4, 9pm)

Even if you're not a footy fan, chances are you'll recognise former soccer star Dennis Wise from his time in the jungle last year.

Constantly lampooned by Dec (formerly of Ant and Dec fame) for being a "very, very small man," the I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here! experience boosted his profile no end, even if his working relationship with fellow contestant Iain Lee proved controversial.

Dennis wasn't the only one to have a career-boost because of those Bushtucker Trials.

Glamour model and author Katie Price found romance in Australia thanks to ITV's hit challenge show, and now both she and Mr Wise are turning their attention to another evergreen favourite.

Okay, The Crystal Maze did have a couple of decades away from the box, but a new generation have fallen for the format, not least thanks to Richard Ayoade's often-hilarious presentation.

"And you are?" he'd ask an alleged celeb in a previous episode. They'd tell him, and he'd repeat the question more earnestly. "No, seriously. Who are you?"

Talking of which, the other alleged celebrities taking part are DJ Roman Kemp (no, not a clue), Made in Chelsea's Binky Felstead (a little more familiar, though not much), and Happy Mondays maraca-shaker Bez (jackpot!).

With Binky getting in a mathematical spin in the Futuristic Zone, Katie sizing up the Medieval Zone as a potential wedding venue, and Bez mesmerised by the flying tokens in the dome, it remains to be seen whether this team have the focus needed to crack the eponymous labyrinth.

Fans with long memories might remember the original show, which left millions hooked between 1990 and 1995. With Rocky Horror Show's Richard O'Brien at the helm, Jacques Antoine's creation caught the imagination of millions.

Ed Tudor-Pole took over presenting duties in 1993, and for a couple more years, it continued to entertain the masses before the plug was pulled.

After a 21-year gap, the show returned with a special fronted by Stephen Merchant, before Travel Man and IT Crowd veteran Richard took over.

With a purpose-built set spanning over 30,000 square feet at Bristol's Bottle Yard Studios, Ayoade plays the Maze-master with just the right level of throwaway humour.

Of course, challenge shows with huge sets don't always work. Back in 1994, ITV spent a fortune on the series Scavengers. That futuristic 'salvage' retrieval contest was thrashed in the ratings by Pets Win Prizes, which cost a fraction of the budget. Scavengers was axed after just 13 episodes.

No such problems with TCM however.

Who knows how long the current incarnation will run for, but with assorted zones keeping the format intriguing, whether it's Futuristic, Industrial or Medieval, there's no shortage of fun and drama to keep channel-hoppers away from the zapper, at least until the adverts arrive.

So, settle back, and while you search the 'net for DJ Roman Kemp's career history, let him, Bez, Katie Price and the other 'famous' faces amaze you with their ingenuity - or lack of it.

Building Britain's Canals (Channel 5, 8pm)

Dan Jones's documentary makes for fascinating viewing as he examines Britain's most iconic waterways, beginning with the 152-mile Grand Union Canal, which runs up the backbone of the country. It was built at the height of the Industrial Revolution, a task which pushed even the greatest engineering minds of the time to their limits, including pioneers such as James Brindley, the man behind Britain's first commercial canal, and William Jessop, one of the people responsible fro creating the link between Birmingham and London.

Lethal Weapon (ITV, 9pm)

The sound of wedding bells and police sirens combine as crimebusting duo Riggs and Murtaugh attend Leo Getz's surprise wedding - with Murtaugh as Leo's best man. However, the duo soon find themselves at the heart of the action when fiancee Nina disappears at a key moment - with a very large sum of money apparently in her possession. Later, Riggs comes face to face with someone from his past, and Murtaugh receives news that seems likely to change his life for ever. Clayne Crawford and Damon Wayans star.

Cruising with Jane McDonald+(C5, 9pm)

You could have heard a few chins hit the floor when this series won a Bafta a few weeks ago. As a rule of thumb, not many Channel 5 documentaries take home gongs from the British Academy. In fact none of them did - until this year. However, given the fun mix of travelogue, celebrity banter and easy-on-the-eye locations, there was little wonder the eponymous entertainer won over the masses and a few critics. Of course for millions of us who love nothing more than jumping on board a floating hotel and soaking up the great shows and amazing views, this is the next best thing to being there. In the second of a two-parter, we see what happened when Ms McDonald explored the wonders of Australia and New Zealand.
