THE North-East offers some of Britain’s most unique and contrasting landscapes, from the iconic Angel of the North to the North Shields Fish Quay, to the beauty of Alnwick Gardens and the bridges across the Tyne.

Dancers leaping and spinning down alleys, through markets or at the bus stop may not be the first thought that springs to mind, but that’s exactly how Newcastle based arts company Moving Art Management are reframing how we view these places by creating a snapshot of dance outdoors right at the heart of our region in a project called Moving Cities North East.

Moving Art Management teamed up with world renowned photographer Jevan Chowdhury to bring his multi-award winning international project Moving Cities (www.moving-cities.com) to the North-East. His projects so far have captured dancers in the cityscapes of Paris, Athens, Brussels and

Prague, and most recently a film in Dallas, Texas.

Shot in the middle of winter over three days, Moving Art Management, Jevan and 12 North-East professional dancers from different dance genres and with an age range spanning over five decades, took to the streets to capture photographs in 25 locations.

A preview of a small selection of the images released on Instagram has captured the imaginations of people from across the world with over 11,000 likes on social media, describing the images as "fascinating", "poetry" and "stunning".

The simages will be exhibited at Dance City (Apr/May/Jun), Alnwick Playhouse (Jul/Aug) and Sunderland Bridges Shopping Centre (Oct). A programme of themed dance workshops will also be offered to the public and local groups near each venue.

The exhibition launches at Dance City, Temple Street, Newcastle City Centre on Thursday, April 6, 2017 and will remain on display for three months. After the regional tour of the photographs, the series will become a permanent feature at Dance City. Admission is free and opening times can be found on Dance City’s website – http://www.dancecity.co.uk/
