THE story of the little girl genius who develops supernatural powers to deal with her monstrous headmistress is well-known and beloved by adults and children alike.

The opening number, Miracle, could have been a bit unsettling to the audience members still at primary school, who had been allowed to stay up way past their bedtime, with its creepy score and overt cynicism about how much parents cherish their offspring.

It is quite fitting though, in reflecting the views expressed by Matilda author Roald Dahl in the opening pages of his classic novel, now a multi award-winning Royal Shakespeare Company musical, which has made its North-East debut.

Before too long, we are introduced to the grotesque Wormwoods, who take the opposite tack, and cannot stand the latest addition to their family, the “boy without a thingy”.

Annalise Bradbury is stunning in the title role, with a commanding voice impressive for one so small, as is Isobelle Chalmers, as Lavender, Matilda’s best friend, who plays a “little bit of a madam” adorably.

Craige Els, has reprised the role of The Trunchbull, having played her in the West End for three years, and steals every scene, portraying her as a terrifying, but hilarious, butch, over-the-top, camp disciplinarian.

A cast of precocious young performers bring to life the songs by Tim Minchin, which includes beautiful ballads, soaring solos, fantastic foot-tappers and several showstoppers.

When I Grow Up is tinged with sadness about the loss of youthful innocence, but the underlying theme throughout about the magic of childhood shines through.
