A designer from North Yorkshire has thought up a novel way of keeping cosy and warm as temperatures drop

An enterprising young designer from North Yorkshire has designed a range of winter hoods called LILhood. "No one ever said, 'I just love what the rain has done to my curly hair'," laughs 27-year-old Lily Bristow. The hoods are hand-made using faux fur in three colours, with mini versions sold on the website for little ones. They have a waterproof oil skin outer layer and cosy faux sheepskin lining, with inbuilt black drawstring for pull-close, plus grosgrain ribbon.

"Worn down, the hoods sit elegantly around the neckline, making a trend statement," says Lily. "Worn up in the rain, the trim flatters and they look fabulous with this season's coats."

Lily grew up on a farm in Great Langton, near Northallerton. Now working in London and managing myLILhood in the evenings and weekends, she says she came across the idea by chance. "I've always been creative and liked making things – curtains, PJs, towels," she says. "I've always like customising my clothes too and thought carefully about how to customise a basic anorak hood and turn it into a fully waterproof fashion item." After she made one, friends wanted them too. "As they were taking five hours each to make, I took to using my mother's old sewing machine, and now have another person helping me meet demand."

The hoods will be on sale at Northallerton Santa Sunday, on December 4. Also available online. W mylilhood.co.uk
