GLENN Tilbrook and his support Charlie Austen laid on a splendid night's entertainment at the Sage on Tuesday evening.

Austin is an amiable and easy-going performer, quick to make a rapport with her audience, captivating them with 30 minutes of fine, self written, folk-soul .

Stand out tunes were 'Little Yellow Birds', 'Traces of You' and 'Copenhagen', and she's an artist well worth catching. Happily, she'll be returning to the Sage in May when supporting Nine Below Zero, so don't miss her set.

Tilbrook was as entertaining as ever. When Squeeze are on hiatus, he's usually on the road with a guitar or two and never fails to provide value for money. Swapping between acoustic and an electric guitars it’s criminal just how overlooked his talent as a guitarist is.

This visit he gave us the usual Squeeze hits like 'Tempted', 'Up The Junction', ‘Pulling Mussels’ and 'Labelled With Love', but threw into the mix more recent tunes like 'Albatross’ and ‘Patchouli’ from last year’s ‘The Knowledge’ album.

As always, one of the joys of seeing Tilbrook is seeing which other artist’s songs he covers and which Squeeze songs he excavates from the archive. Cover-wise he delivered two gems – Fleetwood Mac’s ‘Oh Well’ and Burt Bacharach’s “Always Something There To Remind Me’.

Older fans were treated to ‘Woman’s World’ from 'East Side Story’, ‘If I Didn’t Love You’ from ‘Argybargy’ and ‘Walk Away’ from ‘Ridiculous’ which rounded out the set nicely.

If you need a further Squeeze fix, Chris Difford will be appearing at the Sage on April 4 with Boo Hewerdine.
