THE Dolls are returning to Newcastle at the weekend as Nancy Doll, her on-stage musical cohorts, and their increasingly famous ‘Dolls Army’ head to the O2 Academy for a St. George’s Day spectacle featuring them, Badness, and The Good Souls.

In the four short years the band have been together, yes they only sprang to life back in 2014 when the altar-ego, Nancy Doll, from Ashington in Northumberland, and the band manager, Paul Smith, decided something was missing on the music scene.

In that short time-frame they’ve released an EP, a live album, played the Isle of Wight Festival, performed at the British F1 Grand Prix and much more, including last year’s Daughters of Anarchy tour.

This year, the dirty rock, punk, ska, five-piece band are embarking on the Psycho Tour with Nancy Doll being joined by Jilly Idol, Connie Rotter, Anna Key and Kitty Vacant, touring the length and breadth of the country and taking in some summer festivals along the way.

“It is difficult for the band the way in which the industry is at the moment but we’ll just keep doing what we’re doing,” admitted Nancy.

“Gigging is like a constant high for us and we are constantly bouncing. It showed in the recent outings we had in London (at the 100 Club) and Brighton (Concorde 2).

“Those two gigs were amazing and we were completely overwhelmed with it all, more as we’d not even done those venues before.”

Already enmeshed in their current, Psycho Tour, the girls don’t rehearse, it’s an off-the-cuff thing for them – suppose you have to when your fellow band members are spread across the country.

The one thing missing off the girls’ resume at present is a slot at Download, and is something Nancy has a goal for.

“The DOA (Daughters of Anarchy) tour was absolutely amazing and performing at the Isle of Wight was certainly the best thing ever,” continued Nancy.

“However, I really want to do Download, we all do.

“Every day on this (Psycho) tour is just that though and we’re really looking forward to coming to Newcastle.

“That venue, the sound, it’s just great – and Geordies, they’re all nutters and are always well up for it.

“For me, it’ll be great to back home even if it’s just for a short time. I’ve a few people coming along on the night and we can’t wait.”
