EastEnders (BBC One)

IF anyone is looking to make a movie version of the musical Chess, perhaps they should set it in Walford. There's certainly plenty of gripping tension as Ted sets up a game for Bernadette; the sorrow as her opponent thrashes her, before she fights back, and then joy turning to horror for Ted as he gets what he suspects is heartburn. (We know you so well Ted, and it's not indigestion).

However, when Bernadette reads a letter he received from Joyce, they are both stunned: inside are tickets to Australia. Later, Sonia takes Ted to A&E, and though he claims he's got the all-clear, that's far from true.

Meanwhile, Ian prepares for the launch of Walford East. It doesn't help that there's bad blood between him and a journalist sent from the local paper. As no party in soapland passes without a bombshell, the latest is a drunken Kush revealing that Kim is pregnant - in front of everyone.

Ian is gutted that his restaurant-opening was so disastrous and blames a besotted Kathy and Masood.

Coronation Street (ITV)

AFTER weeks of trying to pretend that everything is okay, Sean finally breaks down to Billy after Carol is admitted to hospital and confesses he's homeless. Thankfully he gets his job back at Underworld, and is offered a place to stay, but he is concerned when Carol later goes missing.

Meanwhile, Leanne feels hurt after her night with Imran, Dev decides to call it a day with Gina after she gets drunk, and Henry is tempted to steal Rita's cheque for £15,000. If that wasn't dastardly enough, when Jenny and Johnny re-launch the Rovers, the crooked brewery heir breaks his arm in the cellar and threatens to sue them.

Audrey decides to carry on her fling with Lewis, and lies to Gail that she is going on a cruise instead of hiding out in her house with the veteran charmer. And while sharing a laugh with old friend Paula, Sally suggests they should set her daughter up with Sophie.

Emmerdale (ITV)

WHILE Matty tries (and fails) to tell Abby he's trans, one thing leads to another and they wind up kissing. However, when Victoria later finds Abby crying, she assumes Matty dropped the bombshell and berates the newcomer for not being more understanding.

It turns out Abby knew nothing about the transition - but she does now, and Matty is gutted. Oops.

Elsewhere, a thrilled Belle celebrates the fact she's passed her A Levels, but proves she's not all that bright when she makes plans to move in with Lachlan. When Priya mentions she's hired a dog patrol for the glamping site, it leaves Lachlan concerned, and he prepares to burn down the cabin where he held Rebecca.

Kerry is angry to realise the Spencers are behind on their rent payments, but is Nicola right to suspect her when the factory's money goes missing from her bag?

Misty also becomes a fly in Nicola's ointment when she makes plans to whisk Rodney away to Thailand. And while Maya warns Jacob to stay away from Leanna, Lydia is grateful for Sam's support as she gets her test results.
