IT was certainly a ‘good Friday’ for fans of The Fratellis, who flocked to see the band’s sold-out show at Newcastle’s O2 Academy, writes Marie Westmoreland.

Support came from Texas rock duo Black Pistol Fire who more than warmed up the crowd with their high energy-packed slot.

Frontman Kevin McKeown and drummer Eric Owen are mesmerising to watch and are easily one of the best support bands I’ve seen in a long time.

Excitement continued to buzz as the light dimmed and The Fratellis made their way on stage.

Starting with lively number Henrietta, a track from their debut album Costello Music, which was released more than decade ago, ensured the show got off to a cracking start.

Scottish singer songwriter, Jon Fratelli looked every inch the rock star, however, his laid-back vibe seemed a little mismatched in comparison to the upbeat music that the band is renowned for.

The audience was a mixture of fans old and new and they lapped up track after track, singing and chanting along to songs such as Whistle For The Choir and Creeping, as well as new material from their 2018 album, In Your Own Sweet Time.

Their standout track was aptly left until the encore and as the thumping beat of Chelsea Dagger kicked in the crowd roared in approval.

A rock-infused cover of ’60s track Runaround Sue ended the show on a high.
