IT may have been the bride’s special day at the wedding in North Yorkshire, but after guest Marion Drewery had her makeover at Shine in Northallerton, she was another star of the show.

Marion won our Shine this Summer competition to have a cut and colour, make-up and manicure after being nominated by her mum Mary Dennis. After booking her appointment on the morning of a friend’s daughter’s wedding day, Marion was able to arrive at the church in style after being pampered for two and a half hours.

“It’s been an absolute treat,” said Marion, who works as a project officer in adult services at North Yorkshire County Council. “I told the stylist she could do what she wanted and I’m very pleased with it. I could definitely get used to this sort of pampering, but now it’s back to the real world.” Giving her verdict, Mary said: “There’s only one word for it and that’s stunning.”

Mary nominated her daughter to give her a special treat close to the anniversary of her younger son Bobbie’s sudden death two years ago.

Bobbie, who was 15, collapsed and died on the playing fields at Northallerton College. In her letter nominating Marion, Mary wrote: “She has done so well and always puts others first so she deserves this treat especially at this time of year.”

Marion, who has three more children, Claire, 27, John, 25, and Bethany, 19, and two grandsons, said: “You either give up or you carry on and with so many other family members to think about I had no choice, but to carry on. I knew absolutely nothing about the makeover until mum rang me at work after she’d won and said ‘I’ve got an admission to make’.”

Hair stylist Becky Keillor coloured Marion’s hair with a warm, rich shade from the Koleston Perfect range by Wella. “We loved the length but I was keen to shape it more, especially at the back, and add some slight texture throughout. We kept the fringe choppy but soft and left a section of natural colour at the front. I blow-dried it nice and smooth and finished it with the irons,” explained Becky. “I’ve been at the salon a long time and remember Marion from when I shampooed her hair as a trainee, so it was lovely to be able to do her hair properly after all this time.”

Afterwards Marion had her nails done by therapist Jenny Leung and make-up by Shine beauty owner Siobhan Caffery. “Marion told me she wears minimal make-up so I was keen that we kept a natural but professional look,” Siobhan explained. I used a primer followed by a liquid foundation and powder, with a light dusting of bronzer and blusher. Marion doesn’t usually wear eyeliner so I blended this well and used a natural eye colour to bring out the blue in her eyes, finishing with a rose shade on her lips. It was our pleasure to look after her and I hope she really enjoys her new look.”
