Little Fiat collects big award

3:46pm Thursday 8th November 2007

THE revived Fiat 500 - due back on sale in the UK next year - has beaten bigger and pricier models to take a prestigious car award.

Shrugging off challenges from the likes of Rolls-Royce, Mercedes and BMW, the Fiat 500 was voted Car Magazine's Car of the Year 2007.

Cars editor Phil McNamara said: "There have been strong contenders for Car of the Year 2007, but none is more deserving than the Fiat 500.

"The cheapest car on our shortlist is also the best. It's a welcome return to form by Fiat - a small car thats bursting with big personality, desirability and raw ability. It speaks volumes that a city car costing £8,000 beat a £300,000 Rolls-Royce."

The first Fiat 500 rolled off the production line in 1957. Measuring only 9ft 9ins long, the Fiat redefined the meaning of the term small car and Car Magazine said the new 2007 model has retained the mini features and quirky characteristics.

The magazine's man of the year crown went to Britain's new Formula One superstar Lewis Hamilton.

Other category winners included BMW's efficient dynamics programme which picked up Car's green award, the Jaguar XF for the best interior, and BMW 4.0-litre V8 which was voted engine of the year.
