A NEW campaign hopes to ensure free periods for women and girls across Teesside.

The cost of sanitary products can be prohibitive to those in need, with some women turning to items including napkins, toilet roll and socks in a bid to manage their periods.

Reports also show that some girls who are unable to afford sanitary products – which cost on average £13 a month - will miss school during their periods as a result.

Free Period aims to provide free sanitary products in all secondary schools and colleges in Teesside.

Those behind the initiative also hope to establish a scheme so that those in need can pick up products for free at local pharmacies.

MEP Jude Kirton-Darling will join author Dr Kayleigh Garthwaite and feminist campaigner Emma Chesworth to launch Free Period on Saturday, November 25.

  • The launch will take place at the South Thornaby Community Centre on Havilland Road from 10am until noon.
  • All are welcome to attend from 9.30am for refreshments. Admission is free but donations of sanitary items would be welcomed.
  • To book a place for the event, email freeperiodcampaign@gmail.com.
