COMMUNITES across the region came together to celebrate unity on a national day of action in memory of murdered MP Jo Cox.
More than 100,000 ‘Great Get Together’ events took place across the country to honour the Labour MP who was killed in her West Yorkshire constituency of Birstall on June 16 last year.
People in Darlington gathered for picnics at the town’s South Park in an event organised by White Rose Darlington and supported by Darlington Assistance for Refugees and multi-faith group Darlington Unity, with live music being played.
A picnic was also held in Middlesbrough’s Albert Park on Saturday, while RSPB Saltholme, near Stockton, held a weekend of family fun, games and activities, as part of the Great Get Together.
North Yorkshire events included picnics in Scarborough and York as well as impromptu street gatherings across the wider region.
Mrs Cox’s widower Brendan said he was “awed” by the way the country embraced his wish for communities to celebrate togetherness on the anniversary of his wife’s killing.
