A SPORTSWEAR firm is targeting fresh growth after a multi-million pound investment.

BLK United Kingdom, based in Stockton, says it hopes to extend into more sports after support from entrepreneur Richard Upshall.

BLK United Kingdom, which employs 20 staff, has deals to supply the Saracens rugby union and England rugby league teams, as well as England’s netball side, with Mr Upshall known for global oilfield inspection business OES, which has its British headquarters in Stockton.

However, he also has a wealth of knowledge in the sportswear sector having been a Middle East licence holder for the BLK brand to provide apparel for teams such as Dubai Exiles Rugby and organisations including the Dubai and Abu Dhabi Police Departments.

His support will help BLK’s existing team, which includes chief executive and Tees Valley mayoral election candidate Ben Houchen.

Mr Upshall said: “BLK has made positive progress, which we will build upon by establishing a presence in a diverse range of sports.”

Mr Houchen said: “Richard’s investment and input will provide a significant springboard.”

Late last year, The Northern Echo revealed how fears had been raised over jobs at the Stockton firm after it was reported Australian-based parent World Rugby Specialists had gone into administration.

However, at the time, bosses said those woes wouldn’t affect the UK firm’s progress since it is owned by an independent business.
