A UNION will ballot oil refinery workers on strike action in a pay dispute.

Unite says staff working for Hertel UK at ConocoPhillips’ site, at Seal Sands, near Middlesbrough, are upset over a wage rise snub.

The action would affect more than 80 workers, who provide repair and maintenance services.

Hertel previously told The Northern Echo the oil and gas sector’s woes have influenced its decision, adding the move will protect workers’ jobs and the site's future.

However, union officials have urged Hertel and ConocoPhillips management for talks with them and their GMB counterparts to negotiate a fair wage deal.

Steve Cason, Unite regional officer, said: “Hertel risks alienating its loyal workforce if it doesn’t sit down to settle the pay dispute.

“Our members work hard to keep this site running safely and receive no thanks.

“The zero per cent pay offer is the last straw.”

He added Unite wants an improved wage structure over three years, linked to National Joint Council for the Engineering Construction Industry rates, of 1.5 per cent in the first year, two per cent in the second year and 2.5 per cent in the third year.

However, David Massey, Hertel UK’s HR director, said the offshore sector’s troubles mean the company is not in a position to offer such terms.

He added: “Our response to Unite’s pay claim takes into account the difficult economic conditions faced by the oil and gas industry.

“Discussions have already taken place with the site representatives regarding the pay claim and meetings will provide us with a further opportunity to explain the reasons for our response, which seeks to protect jobs for employees and investment for the site.”
