DAVID Cameron spoke today of his heartbreak at seeing the shocking pictures of a drowned Syrian boy on a Turkish beach, which has prompted some to call on the Prime Minister to re-think his stance on the UK's intake of refugees.

During his visit to the North-East, business editor Andy Richardson asked Mr Cameron, how did you feel when you saw the pictures this morning?

Mr Cameron said: "Terrible. No one could look at those pictures without being deeply moved.

The Northern Echo:
David Cameron has expressed his heartbreak at seeing the pictures of the drowned Syrian boy

"It made me think of my own children and how I would feel if it was them and how I felt when I lost a child myself.

"It's heartbreaking.

"What we need is a comprehensive solution to these problems and what we've got to do is go after the people who I hold responsible for this child's death, which is ISIL driving people from Syria and criminal gangs encouraging people to take these dangerous routes.

"Britain will always live up to its moral responsibility which is why we sent the Royal Navy to the Mediterranean.

"That saved thousands of lives."

Mr Cameron added: "Yes there is more we can do. We have taken thousands of Syrian refugees and given them asylum and taken people from refugee camps which is an even better solution."
