DETECTIVES investigating an alleged serious sex attack at a nature reserve said they were misled over the incident.

North Yorkshire Police said they are not looking for anyone in relation to the incident, which triggered a large-scale investigation.

Safety concerns mounted in the Quarry Moor area of Ripon after the force stated the woman, in her thirties, had been left traumatised by a daylight attack at the woodland and grassland reserve near Morrisons supermarket, on Tuesday, March 24.

An appeal by the force for information saw dozens of newspapers and radio stations alert people across the north of England, and generated responses from many people.

The woman was supported by specially trained officers as detectives interviewed visitors to the nature reserve, which is known for its kestrels and is popular with dog walkers.

A police spokeswoman said the inquiry had been concluded and it is understood no one has been arrested.

She said: "We would like to reassure the public that the circumstances were not as first reported.

"The woman involved continues to be supported by specialist agencies."

Detective Chief Inspector Allan Harder who led the investigation said: “We take any reports of sexual assault very seriously and all reports are fully investigated.

"We encourage victims to come forward to report any such crime.

“For anyone not wanting to make a complaint directly to the police, victims can still access professional support and advice at our Sexual Assault Referral Centre in York."
