A NORTH-EAST engineering company boss has been recognised with an industry honour.

Geoff Turnbull, chairman of GT Group, has been presented with the individual lifelong contribution to innovation accolade, by technology organisation RTC North.

Since forming GT Group in 1985, Mr Turnbull has focused on technology-led innovation to make the firm a major player in environmental engineering.

The company, based in Peterlee, east Durham, specialises in engine emission systems for global heavy-duty vehicle makers.

It has also developed emergency breakaway couplings, which are used in hose connections during transfers of liquid natural gas.

Speaking about his award, Mr Turnbull said: “I’m really proud to receive this honour.

“Innovation is the lifeblood of the UK’s engineering and manufacturing industry and is essential if we are to remain competitive in the global market.

“The North-East has always been one of the most innovative regions and companies like us continue to build on that legacy, which will help secure this area’s economic future and maintain its world-class reputation.”

Mr Turnbull started his career as an apprentice at Castrol Oil’s Hartlepool engineering division before joining Precision Engineering, in Peterlee, as a tool maker.

He then developed his business skills at companies in the region, ahead of starting his own business.

GT Group now exports to more than 60 countries, and develops specialist exhaust gas control systems, which are designed to reduce exhaust emissions on medium and heavy-duty diesel engines.

Employing more than 300 staff, the company has plans to increase that number to 500 in three years.
