A CHILDREN’S book chronicling the adventures of the Great North Air Ambulance Service’s latest recruit could soon appear on the shelves of a future king.

Katie the Bear followed in the footsteps of future East Anglian Air Ambulance pilot Prince William when she joined the charity’s northern division earlier this year.

Since then, the cuddly crew member, created by Lesley Harrison of Cassop Vale Bears, has joined the airborne medics on missions across the North-East and Cumbria.

A story book of Katie’s adventures will be written to raise money for the charity and it is hoped the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s son, Prince George, will be among the first to receive a copy.

Earlier this month, Prince William, a former RAF search and rescue pilot, announced he will join the East Anglican Air Ambulance Service next spring.

But the royal connections do not stop there.

Katie is the girlfriend of William, another of Mrs Harrison’s creations, who went to sea with the crew of HMS Bulwark in 2011.

The crew wrote a blog of William’s escapades, which was turned into a book, The Nautical Adventures of William The Bear, to raise funds for Durham Trinity School and Sports College and St Cuthbert’s Hospice.

William was commissioned by the then chairman of Durham County Council, Dennis Morgan, and current chairman, Councillor John Robinson, was keen to recreate the idea to raise funds for one of his chosen charities.

He said: “I thought it would be a fantastic way to raise funds the Great North Air Ambulance.

“We hope to send a copy of both books to William and Kate for Prince George. I am sure they will love it given the royal family’s links to the air ambulance and the names of the bears.”

Mrs Harrison, 58, set up Cassop Vale Bears in 2011 in memory of her beloved daughter, Janine, who was killed by an out of control bus in 1998 when she was 18-years-old.

The Grandmother-of-one, from Cassop, near Durham City, mainly makes memory bears, a poignant keepsake created using the clothing of lost loved ones.

Paul Burnage, a Great North Air Ambulance Service paramedic, said: “Lesley is so talented. Katie is fantastic. She has been all over with us; Newcastle, Cumbria and we hope to take her a little further-a-field too.

“We made her a uniform, as dresses aren’t really suitable in the helicopter.”
