Pub regulars raise funds for Stevie-Lee

3:26pm Thursday 7th June 2001

REGULARS at the Otter pub in Bushey placed bets and swapped inside tips at a race night, which raised more than £650 for eight-year-old muscular dystrophy sufferer Stevie-Lee Armstrong.

Stevie-Lee, from Garston, suffers from Duchenne Muscular Distrophy, a severe form of the muscular wasting disease, which only affects boys.

Proceeds from the race night at the pub in Bushey Mill Lane, will go towards new equipment to enhance his quality of life.

Landlady Miss Sandy Langford organised the event, in which patrons bet on pre-recorded horse races, after Stevie's name was put forward by pub darts team player Mrs Sandy Sheppard.

The event raised £654.20 for the Stevie-Lee Appeal Fund, which was set up by his family after he was diagnosed with the disease in 1997.

Stevie attends Coates Way School, in Garston, and is a keen footballer.

His mother, Miss Angela Armstrong, said: "I would just like to thank everybody who donated raffle prizes and supported this event. Stevie is doing really well at the moment. He'd like to say thank you, too."

Stevie's grandmother, Mrs Linda Harman, added: "We had a brilliant night. It really was very good fun and raised a fantastic amount of money."
