A FAMILY-RUN bistro is serving an apprentice with an insight into the world of work.

Aspiring chef Jordan Hinchcliffe is studying an NVQ in professional cookery at Middlesbrough College.

The 18-year-old needed to work alongside experienced chefs to learn the trade, and found support from Howards, in Stokesley, North Yorkshire.

He is now working with head chef, Andrew Russell, who has been at the bistro for three years and previously worked in a number of high-profile restaurants across the region.

Bosses say Mr Hinchcliffe will gain experience of food preparation, monitoring health and safety and assembling a range of dishes.

Howards’ commis chef, Douglas Tate, from Great Ayton, North Yorkshire, is also studying for cookery qualifications.

He is working towards a foundation degree in business and culinary arts, having achieved various NVQ qualifications in professional cookery and hospitality and catering at the college.

Graham Howard, owner of Howards, said the business, which employs 15 staff, prides itself on staff development and training.

He said: “The jobs market is tough for young people these days and it’s vital we support them how we can.

“We are passionate about offering opportunities and supporting education and development.

“Jordan and Douglas are incredibly enthusiastic about their trade and are learning such a lot working under an experienced chef like Andrew.”

Mr Hinchcliffe added: “Howards has a great reputation and this is a brilliant opportunity for me to develop my career in a fast-paced environment that serves everything from breakfasts to evening meals.

“I’m really excited to be working with some very experienced chefs who I know I’ll learn such a lot from, as well as contribute some of my own ideas as I progress with my studies.”

Mr Howard took over the business in 2008, and is also head of family-run building firm RA Howard and Sons, in Brotton, near Saltburn, east Cleveland.

He took over the running of the company in 1982 from his father, Ron.
