MORE than 30 jobs are set to go
at a chemical company's County
Durham site.
Arizona Chemical said that as
well as reducing operations and
cutting the number of workers at
Chester-le-Street from 48 to 17, it
also plans to close its plant at
Bedlington, in Northumberland,
which employs 43 people.
UK plant manager David
Schofield said: "Our employees
have done a remarkable job over
the years and this recommendation
in no way reflects on their
performance.

"It is a business consideration
driven by economic necessities.
Whatever decision is finally
made, we will make our best
effort to ensure that the recommended
process is as easy
as possible for local staff."
The company is currently in
consultation with the trade
unions and employee representatives
at Chester-le-Street and
Bedlington.
In a statement, the company
added: "Until that process is complete,
no decision will be made.
"It is hoped that volunteers
would mitigate the need for compulsory
redundancies. In addition,
an Employee Assistance
Programme will remain in place
to provide support for employees
and their families during this period."
Arizona Chemical is a global
supplier of pine chemicals for the
adhesives, inks, coatings, lubricants,
plastics and oleochemicals
markets.
