ZERO-EMISSION vehicle maker
Tanfield Group has struck a £7m
deal to create the world's biggest
electric-powered fleet.
The deal - also the biggest single
contract ever to be struck for
its Smith Electric Vehicles division
- will see the firm, based in
Washington, Wearside, supply 100
of its vehicles to global distribution
company TNT.
In addition to the 50 vehicles ordered
from Tanfield last year,
which are being piloted in the
Netherlands with a view to being
used throughout Europe, TNT
will take 50 more for use in its UK
sites.

The deal is the latest major
boost for Tanfield, which is seeing
double-digit growth in both its UK
and North American operations,
and which last month reported a
310 per cent rise in annual profits
last year.
Darren Kell, chief executive of
Tanfield Group, said the deal
could help secure further European
success for the company.
"We're delighted by the
strength of our continuing relationship
with TNT, who have been
a great customer and partner of
Smith Electric Vehicles," he said.
"Following the clear operational
success of our vehicles
with the TNT fleet, we were able
to secure this very significant
order from a major operator.
"The continued roll-out of our
vehicles into mainland Europe
bodes extremely well for further
opportunities in these markets."
