Solicitor’s proud link with father of railways

A SPECIALIST probate solicitor is practising law in the same region one of her ancestors established the world's first steam locomotive railway.

Lucy Hoskyns-Abrahall, who works at Jacksons on Teesside, is the greatgreat- great-granddaughter of Edward Pease, often referred to as the father of the railways.

Pease, alongside George Stephenson, helped to establish the Stockton to Darlington railway in 1825 to link the County Durham collieries and woollen mills with the North-East ports.

Now Mrs Hoskyns-Abrahall, whose maiden name is Pease, is practising law in Stockton - one of the towns connected by the rail route and serviced by Stephenson's Locomotion No 1.

"I think it is just a happy coincidence that I now work in this region and in Stockton, but I am very proud of my heritage," said Mrs Hoskyns-Abrahall, who has worked for Jacksons since 2004.

"I studied as an undergraduate in the North-East, and my husband was born in Darlington, so there are, I suppose, several other links to this region too."

The Pease family is one of the most famous in the Tees Valley over the past two centuries through the establishment of the railway system and numerous mills and factories across the Tees Valley during the Industrial Revolution.

After being raised in both Lincolnshire and Cumbria, Mrs Hoskyns- Abrahall graduated from Newcastle University before moving to London to work in the Houses of Parliament as a researcher for six years.

"It was a very useful and interesting experience to see how the law was made and influenced, and gave a fascinating insight into the workings of Parliament and the legal system," she said.

After taking her legal exams in London, she returned to the North-East to take up the position of trainee solicitor with commercial and private law firm Jacksons.

Mrs Hoskyns-Abrahall qualified as a solicitor in 2006, and now specialises in wills, tax, trusts and estate planning, concentrating on the preservation of assets and looking after the needs of elderly clients. She is a student member of the Society for Trusts and Estate Practitioners and was previously trainee representative for the Tees Valley Law Society.
