A FORMER steelworker has toasted the impact of a support fund after embarking on a pub venture.

Jonathan Skelton has opened the High Line, in Redcar.

Mr Skelton, a former overhead crane driver at Redcar’s SSI UK, received help from the SSI Taskforce, which was founded in the aftermath of the business’ collapse to get staff back into work and training, or push ahead with business start-ups.

The 44-year-old worked as a plasterer following the steel firm’s 2015 demise, and said he got the idea for his pub through that role.

He said: “I was working in a micro pub last year and really liked the atmosphere.

“I like to meet people, and this is a brilliant way to do that.”

Mr Skelton, who is supported by wife Joanne, daughter Katie and son James at the pub, praised the SSI Taskforce’s support, which he says has given him a fresh start and strengthened the family bond.

He added: “The financial support from the Taskforce made all the difference.

“They also helped me prepare my business plan and really focus, and they have been fantastic.”

Officials say the Taskforce has now helped pave the way for more than 300 start-up businesses across the region.
