A FAMILY-RUN roofing company is creating jobs after quadrupling last year’s income in just three months.

Findley Roofing says it wants more than 60 staff after turnover rocketed to £10m.

Bosses say they want joiners, labourers and experienced roofing and building contractors, as well as admin staff, bookkeepers and sales workers, adding they also hope to expand the business’ headquarters.

They added the recent success of the company, based in Washington, Wearside, has been driven by new sales and marketing director Tony Finnegan.

The business is known for delivering a number of services across the North-East, including flat and garage roofing, chimney stack building and repairs, and brickwork pointing.

Middlesbrough-born Mr Finnegan said he believes its turnover achievement is down to his man management and motivational skills.

He said: “All human beings deserve respect and compassion, that’s key to getting the most out of people.

“Great leaders work with people, rather than above them and make the team feel appreciated.

“I love nothing more than working with someone who has been having a hard time, to help them turn things around and achieve great things.

“It gives me great pride when I see my team achieving and taking that forward.”

However, the successes have greater meaning for Mr Finnegan, who previously owned a business employing 200 staff.

He has known Findley managing director Grant Findley for years, since the days when Mr Findley was a 17-year-old canvasser and Mr Finnegan his boss.

He added: “Work is and has always been my passion and it’s great to be reunited with Grant and to see him running his own business now.

“We have the same values; we both care about people and that attracted me to join the team.”

Mr Findley praised the impact of his former boss, saying his arrival has given the company a lift.

He added: “Things were ticking along quite nicely but Tony has made me realise the true potential of the firm and we have all stepped up a gear.

“He has had such an impact and motivated the whole sales team to perform at their best.”

Findley has also launched a re-homing and training scheme aimed at helping ex-military personnel rebuild their lives.

The Homeless Ex-Servicemen Programme (HESP) has been set up in the hope of offering those with a military background the support they require after leaving the forces, while solving a skills shortage in the industry.

Officials say the eight to 12-week programme will give former servicemen a roof over their heads and even the possibility of fulltime employment.

Trainees will work closely with Mr Finnegan and Mr Findley to learn basic skills.

Mr Findley added those attending the scheme will be housed at company apartments in Durham.
