A PORT operator is now using a new £6m crane it says will improve services.

PD Ports’ ship-to-shore crane is supporting work at Teesport.

Officials say the apparatus, based at the port’s container terminal two, will boost the site’s ability to service greater container volumes, which have grown 12 per cent year-on-year for the last seven years.

Frans Calje, PD Ports’ chief executive, said: “Pace and frequency are vital components in container shipping.

“The addition of a fifth ship-to-shore crane will further enhance our performance by reducing the time taken to transfer containers from port to road and rail for UK distribution.”

The equipment, co-financed by EU funding, comes after PD Ports spent millions on three tall rubber tyre gantry cranes and carried out a major quay upgrade to welcome larger vessels.
