A BUSINESS leader has taken on a top role at a North- East university.

Paul Drechsler has become chancellor at Teesside University.

The former ICI worker, who began his career on Teesside, succeeds Lord Sawyer of Darlington, who served in the post since 2005.

He will take up his position in the autumn, with the role seeing him act as an ambassador to promote the university on a regional, national and international level.

Mr Drechsler is president of the Confederation of British Industry and after starting locally at ICI, he worked around the world, including stints in Brazil and the US.

Currently chairman of Bibby Line Group, he was previously chairman and chief executive of the privatelyowned construction firm Wates Group.

“I am honoured and delighted to accept the role of chancellor and build on the excellent work of Lord Sawyer at what is a most exciting time in its history”, said Mr Drechsler.

“The university is playing a vital role, clearly understanding the need to be at the centre of a thriving region, connecting with the community, the students and with local and international businesses.

“It has ambitious plans and I look forward to working with Professor Paul Croney and his team in helping to build Teesside into one of the most successful universities in the UK, through being brilliantly connected with what industry wants for the future.”

Mr Drechsler is also chairman of the board of the charity Teach First and a board member of Business in the Community and the UK International Chamber of Commerce.

Prof Croney, vice-chancellor and chief executive, said his background makes him a perfect fit for the university.

He said: “Paul brings a wealth of experience and shares our vision of providing opportunity, drivingenterprise and delivering excellence to our students, graduates and employers, evidenced through his own commitment to business, education and economic growth.

“I would like to thank Lord Sawyer for his immense contribution over the past 12 years.

“He has been a superb ambassador and he’s played an active part in university life, supporting our students and community.”

Lord Sawyer added: “It has been a real honour to serve as chancellor and to support its mission to develop and apply knowledge that helps its students, partners and community to succeed. I wish Mr Drechsler every success.”
