A FAMILY-OWNED timber merchant has created jobs after expanding into a new base.

Nordstrom Timber has nearly doubled in size following a move to a 60,000sq ft site.

Bosses say its new headquarters include a timber yard and joinery shop, as well as a showroom, which features a mock home decorated with the company’s staircases and windows.

They also revealed the switch has delivered an initial four posts, taking the business’ headcount to 23, adding more jobs are expected in the near future as the firm continues its growth.

The company, based in the Hendon area of Sunderland, has operated for almost 65 years, and says its expansion is a response to increasing customer demand.

Originally founded on the city’s Nile Street by Herman Nordstrom in 1953, it is now led by Alan Nordstrom, Herman’s son, who works in the business alongside his son David Nordstrom and daughter Lynne Nellis.

Alan said the impact of the move will be two-fold, with Nordstrom able to expand its range without sacrificing links to traditional customer services.

He added: “The move was essential to the business and its customers’ needs, with the new showhome playing a vital role in its ongoing success.

“Everything displayed in the house is either made here on site or can be purchased from our timber yard and sales counter.

“Customers can now see all our products in one place, be inspired and see how versatile timber can be.

“Our staff have a wealth of knowledge and I think people still like coming in and actually speaking with someone, unlike shopping online.

“Trade customers also appreciate the fact all our timber products are under cover and they can drive in and load up.”

Councillor Harry Trueman, deputy leader of Sunderland City Council, said Nordstrom, which has experience of supporting work on football stadiums, town halls and housing developments, was a real example of the quality within Wearside’s business community.

He added: “This is a fantastic business, which is making high-quality products and has committed its future to Sunderland after 65 years of doing business in the city.

“It’s a great vote of confidence.”
