A TECHNOLOGY firm is working with organisers of a famous half-marathon to ensure the continued smooth running of its sporting schedule.

Leighton has secured a contract to support The Great Run Company.

Bosses say the business, based at Rainton Bridge, near Houghton-le-Spring, Wearside, will create a new registration process for entrants, which will help prepare thoroughly for their chosen race.

The Great Run Company organises mass participation running and swimming events, including the Great North Run, which attract more than 250,000 participants every year.

According to its contract, Leighton, which has experience of working with companies such as British Airways and Sunderland AFC’s Foundation of Light charitable arm, will deliver a system that makes it easier for people to submit their details and enter competitions.

Lyle McCalmont, chief executive, said the business was chosen ahead of national and international rivals thanks to its experience and ability to innovate.

He said: “Working with The Great Run Company is an honour and our team is excited about being involved in such a project for a company we support and admire.

“The work brings together our full suite of in-house skills, which include technical development, creative design and project control.

“We look forward to delivering a fantastic user experience for customers registering for future Great Run Company events.”

Leighton’s British Airways work saw it help the carrier restructure a flight sales process, while its Sunderland AFC project created a new website for the charity separate from the club’s main page.

Such a back catalogue said Paul Foster, chief technology officer at The Great Run Company, which runs its headquarters out of Newcastle and has an events platform running from Aberdeen to Portsmouth, made Leighton an obvious choice.

He added: “We’re excited to be working with Leighton to develop a platform.

“Entering a Great Run event will be easier and faster than ever, and we’ll be able to serve our runners more relevant content, better advice and deliver a richer experience, from their entry process, through their training, to the finish line and beyond.

“Leighton’s skills and vision for the project stood out, and we’re delighted to be partnering with another great North-East business.”

The Great Run Company’s extensive list of events includes half-marathons in Manchester and Bristol and the Great North Swim, in the Lake District, while it also organises races for junior competitors and families right across the UK.
